I’m staying in a weird hotel in a little place called North Killingholme. There is no direct bus route from here to Grimsby, but I have a cunning plan. I will drive to Immingham, a nearby village, and catch the bus from there.

Welcome to Cleethorpes Seafront. But is it the sea, or is it an estuary? I really get the feeling that Cleethorpes sits on the dividing line between estuary and coast, much as Whitstable does in Kent.

I’m staying in a hotel in Grimsby and, in order to avoid a long bike ride down busy roads, I decide to catch the bus to Cleethorpes. Unfortunately, the bus soon fills up with hordes of chatty teenagers on their way to school. Only one single girl on the bus has the courtesy to wear a mask.
So I spend the journey in a state of high anxiety, and am relieved when the girls got off at their stop. I get off near the “Pleasure Island” in Cleethorpes, and watch the bus leave.

I approach the gate with some anxiety. Will I have to turn back and complete this walk by trudging along roads? No! Thank goodness. It’s not a public right of way, but the sign says it’s a Permissive Footpath.

There is still a red flag flying at Donna Nook. I leave my Scooty bike chained up to a fence post in the long grass at the edge of the overflow carpark. In the absence of an obvious hiding place, I decide leaving it in plain view is the best option.

I’ve reached a dead end. In front of me, the sea wall continues, but apparently there is no way through to Donna Nook.
To my right, a track leads towards the sea. But this is MOD property and there is no access when the red flags are flying. I can’t pretend I haven’t seen the red flags.

I’m back in Lincolnshire and making the most of a few days of fine September weather. But, when I park The Beast in the car park, at Donna Nook, I’m alarmed to see a red flag flying over the dunes.

I leave the wide beach behind, and follow a path over the dunes, to where it joins a farm track. On the way, I pass several warning signs about unexploded ordinances and the danger area I’m leaving.

It’s midday when I reach Vickers Point, where I spot a beach cafe and decide it’s time for a treat. I order ice cream with strawberries (fruit makes the snack “healthy”, don’t you know), but the serving lady picks the berries up with bare fingers to position them, artistically, on the plate
With her fingers? Should I say something? Demand another plate?
